- Check PAC, PTY and BOC separately
- Count the transfer to your actual hotel
- Keep a buffer before your international flight
Fly to Isla Colón or travel overnight via Almirante
For a short island stay, start with a flight to Bocas del Toro airport (BOC) on Isla Colón. For an overland journey, compare the overnight bus to Almirante and a separate passenger boat. Both approaches still need a plan for reaching your accommodation.
Choose the island before buying transport. Bocas Town is on Isla Colón; a hotel on Carenero or Bastimentos needs another water transfer. Save your host’s arrival dock and meeting instructions alongside your tickets.
| Decision | Fly to BOC | Bus to Almirante + passenger boat |
|---|---|---|
| Where you arrive | Isla Colón airport; arrange the final hotel transfer | Mainland bus stop, then a separate dock transfer and boat to Isla Colón |
| Time to compare | Published flight time is one hour; add airport travel, check-in and hotel transfer | Overnight bus plus dock transfer, waiting and crossing; no verified door-to-door duration |
| Price to compare | Your dated fare with the baggage you need and airport transfers | Dated bus fare + boat + fees + mainland and hotel transfers |
| Main planning constraint | A PTY arrival may need a separate transfer to PAC | Separate bus and boat tickets do not establish a protected connection |
Allow for the airport change in Panama City
Check the airport codes on both tickets. Tocumen is PTY; Marcos A. Gelabert in Albrook is PAC. If your flights use different airports, add immigration, baggage collection, the road transfer and domestic check-in. Separate bookings do not give you a protected connection.
Keep the first island day flexible. Compare a night in Panama City with the cost of replacing a missed domestic flight, especially after a long international journey. The published flight table below shows flying time, not the full journey from international arrivals to your hotel.
Published flight options and baggage
Air Panama’s October 2026 timetable lists the following Panama–Bocas del Toro flights every day. These are published schedules checked on 23 October, not live seat availability. Confirm the date, airport codes and final price in the booking before arranging onward transport.
Air Panama’s baggage policy lists no checked bag in Basic, one 18 kg bag in Classic or Plus, and two 18 kg bags in Premier. Cabin baggage is limited to 6 kg and 17 × 13.5 × 6.5 inches; wheeled cabin bags must be checked. Compare the fare that accommodates your actual luggage, not just the first price shown.
A flight arrives on Isla Colón, avoiding the mainland bus-to-boat change. It does not necessarily remove a boat transfer to your hotel: Carenero, Bastimentos and other island stays still need their own arrival plan.
| Flight | Departure → arrival | Published flying time |
|---|---|---|
| 680 | 06:45 → 07:45 | 1 hour |
| 682 | 09:45 → 10:45 | 1 hour |
| 980 | 12:45 → 13:45 | 1 hour |
| 982 | 16:00 → 17:00 | 1 hour |
Keep the four overland legs separate
Your route is Albrook bus terminal → Almirante bus stop → passenger dock → Isla Colón. Albrook airport is a different destination from the bus terminal. The bus example and boarding instructions below identify the operator and stop; the passenger boat has its own ticket and boarding point.
If driving instead, compare the rental period and parking with the cost of other transport. Obtain the rental company’s conditions and decide what happens to the vehicle while you stay on the islands. A mainland parking arrangement and a vehicle crossing are different plans.
An actual bus listing: what the advertised price covers
Albrook’s official directory lists Transporte Expreso Bocas for the route serving Almirante, at counter K-05. Choose Almirante explicitly when buying for an onward passenger boat; Changuinola and Chiriquí Grande are different stops.
The operator’s Passline listing for 30 October 2026 advertised a 10 pm departure from Albrook and USD 38 for Panama–Almirante when checked on 23 October. This is a dated advertised bus price, not a checked-out total or a fare promise for another day. No seat was reserved and availability was not confirmed.
Keep the Almirante dock transfer, passenger boat and any onward island transfer outside that USD 38 comparison. Their inclusion was not established by this listing. Use the operator’s calendar for your own departure date before comparing the bus with a flight.
| Part of the journey | Evidence available |
|---|---|
| Panama–Almirante bus | 30 October example: 10 pm, USD 38 advertised |
| Booking fees and baggage extras | Final checkout total not verified |
| Mainland stop to passenger dock | Terms name Barriada Aeropuerto; dock transfer still to confirm |
| Boat to Isla Colón | Panabocas publishes USD 6 plus online booking fee; date availability unconfirmed |
| Onward hotel transfer | Separate cost where required; no combined fare established |
Confirm the handover in Almirante
Before paying for separate tickets, get the bus arrival point and expected arrival time, then compare them with the passenger boat operator’s boarding point and service on that date. A road arrival estimate does not reserve a boat seat. Keep the accommodation transfer as another leg if you are staying away from Bocas Town.
The terms linked from the 30 October listing recommend arriving 60 minutes before departure and close check-in 30 minutes before departure, unless a particular service requires an earlier deadline. For that advertised 10 pm bus, this means planning to be there at 9 pm and completing check-in before 9:30 pm. Recheck the instructions on your own ticket.
The same document names the Almirante stop as Barriada Aeropuerto, opposite Escuela Adventista. This is not a promise of arrival at a passenger dock. Confirm the stop for your departure, then arrange the dock transfer. The operator describes arrival times as estimates and does not guarantee connections unless expressly contracted.
The passenger boat from Almirante to Isla Colón
Panabocas publishes a USD 6 one-way fare plus an online booking fee, with hourly departures from 6 am to 6 pm. Its route page lists an approximate journey of 60 minutes. These are published service details checked on 23 October 2026, not confirmation of availability on your travel date.
Use the office and boarding-port map on the operator’s route page to identify the departure point. The bus stop and boat dock are separate places. Confirm the transfer between them and leave time for boarding; the boat page asks passengers to arrive in advance without stating an exact check-in cutoff.
The USD 38 dated bus example plus the USD 6 published boat fare adds up to USD 44 in advertised base fares. This is a calculation, not a through-ticket quote: add booking fees, the mainland dock transfer, any baggage extras and your island hotel transfer. The boat operator lists 60 minutes while the bus company’s route page mentions 30; do not plan a tight onward connection around the shorter estimate.
If your arrival does not fit the boat connection
Do not build your island arrival around a boat that has not been confirmed for your date. Panabocas currently publishes departures through 6 pm, but that is a timetable, not a guaranteed seat or a promise to wait for a delayed bus.
If the bus is delayed, contact the boat operator and your accommodation before heading to the dock. Ask whether another departure is confirmed and whether your host can still receive you. A private crossing is not an automatic fallback: availability, operating conditions and price need their own confirmation.
If no onward service is confirmed, compare a verified mainland overnight stay with changing your travel day. This is our contingency-planning recommendation; we have not checked room availability or an after-hours transfer. Avoid paying for an island arrival arrangement that depends on an unconfirmed connection.
| Save before departure | What the confirmation should contain |
|---|---|
| Bus ticket | Date, Almirante stop, boarding deadline and operator contact |
| Boat plan | Date, boarding dock, departure, final fare and baggage conditions |
| Accommodation arrival | Island, meeting dock, host contact and latest agreed arrival |
| Fallback | A confirmed alternative departure or available mainland accommodation |
Leave room for the journey back
Work backwards from your international flight: island departure, mainland or domestic flight, Panama City transfer, then airline check-in. An overnight buffer in the capital is our planning recommendation, not an airline-certified connection time.
Before paying, record the final price and baggage conditions for each ticket, the bus-to-dock transfer and your hotel’s arrival arrangements. Keep the operator links below with your itinerary so you can check changes close to departure.
